Are you a complete & utter #coffeewanchor? Do you grimace at the prospect of a Commodity coffee & insist on only Speciality & Premium brews? And are you anally retentive about knowing the SCA score of the brew you’re slurping?
For those of you who are yet to be educated on SCA scores, fear not because here is a little intro’ from the Coffee Wanchors that will get you frothing at the bean & leave you gagging to know the scores on the doors for your future flat whites. This is gonna be lengthy, so I suggest you grab a cup of your finest & take five.
So…the SCA (Speciality Coffee Association) is a body of complete #coffeewanchors that score coffee on a scale of 1-100 in a process called cupping. Coffee boffins basically sniff, sip & score coffee, & scores are based on 10 different principles of fragrance/aroma, flavour, aftertaste, acidity, body, uniformity, balance, cleanliness of cup, sweetness & an overall score. Coffees scoring 80 plus points are classed as Speciality Coffees, & those ranking at 95 points or higher are seriously sWANKY Premium Coffees.
Any coffees scoring 80 plus points are guaranteed to come from ethical sources, where human rights & the environment are respected & farmers & workers get a good deal. The story behind the beans will be transparent, so you can trace the origins & know about the farmers, their plots & the micro-climates where your beans were nurtured.
All of our delicious Coffee Wanchor brews are between 84 & 88 SCA points, putting them in the TOP 5% of coffee IN THE WORLD!!! Premium Coffees are the top 1%!!! Wowzers! Obviously, these scores are subjective but – generally speaking – higher scoring brews have greater clarity & complexity. Personally, I favour a score of around 84/85, hence why our brews are around this range.
I realise that – in writing this – I sound like a complete bell end, but we Coffee Wanchors find it genuinely interesting & we know that all of our coffee is good quality coffee & comes from a good place. So next time you visit your favourite barista, ask what the SCA score is & the story behind the farm. Makes your brew that little bit more meaningful & makes you sound like a certified & authentic #coffeewanchor.
Very concise and precise article about the scoring of sWANKY coffee 🙂 I’d be grateful if you included process and coffee varieties information for type 5 and type 25 blends. I realise that SCA Score is bit tricky to guess in a blend. Thanks 🙂
